At tonight’s School Board meeting, one of the agenda items is about state accreditation. As I’ve shared previously, last year we added four more fully accredited schools, bringing our two-year increase to eight. Until last week, I didn’t know how the rest of the state fared. Well, I’m proud to share that our two-year gains surpass every other school division in 维吉尼亚州. I don’t share this data to critique other divisions — everyone is working incredibly hard. Rather, I share it to demonstrate that RPS’ success is truly remarkable.

Tonight, we will also be reviewing the 最后 draft of the next iteration of our strategic plan, Dreams4RPS: 2024-2029. I’d like to draw your attention to three parts of the plan, the “passion” projects: Passion4Reading, Passion4Learning, and Passion4Teaching. I can’t begin to express how excited I am about these!

In today’s pitched political climate, I worry about a deficit of kindness. Denigration and ad hominem attacks have become commonplace in our politics, while minor and major slights infect just about everyone’s social media feeds, including our children’s.

In researching kindness, I was struck to learn about something called the “rabbit effect,” first documented in 1978. One was fed by an overly affectionate researcher who cuddled the rabbits while the other group was simply fed. Kindness, it turns out, not only warmed those rabbits’ hearts, but actually made them healthier.

At RPS, we mean it when we say “We love you here!” to our students. That’s why we’ve invested tens of millions of dollars in additional mental-health professionals and worked incredibly hard to create school cultures that are inclusive and affirming. We don’t hit the mark every day in every building, but I do think we’re doing so more and more.

Help us start an epidemic of kindness this week with a shout-out to a teacher, a hug for a struggling student, or a moment of quiet reflection to thank yourself — whether a student, parent, staff member, or community member — for making a positive impact on RPS.

杰森
